Héctor Serrano
“I’m more interested in the future of today than the future of tomorrow.”
Héctor Serrano is a young Valencian designer based in London who has been able to attract people's attention through the sense of humour that flows from his designs.
“No one else would have thought of redesigning our traditional earthenware drinking jug from a country as cold as England, ” states the website of Metalarte, a Spanish lighting company. “Or designing a lamp to float in a swimming pool. ”
Héctor studied industrial design in Valencia before moving to London where he gained an MA in product design at the Royal College of Art. Hector Serrano Studio, as his design office is called, was founded in 2000. The studio is known for projects that combine innovation with the communication of familiar ideas in unusual and inventive ways.
Héctor has a long list of impressive clients, including Muji, FontanaArte, Roca, Moooi, Gandia Blasco, ICEX Spanish Ministry of Industry, , Droog Design, Metalarte, and La Mediterránea, La Casa Encendida (Caja Madrid), and Valencia City Council, among many others. More recently, Héctor began to work with the Spanish lighting firm arturo alvarez.
His studio has received several major awards, such as the Peugeot Design Award and The Premio Nacional de Diseño No Aburridos. In 2009, Héctor was named Designer of the Year by AD magazine. His products have been exhibited extensively in Museums such as V&A in London and Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York, and the Central Museum of Amsterdam.
